Most of us are pretty familiar with THC and CBD but what are these other minor cannabinoids we are suddenly hearing so much about? You may have noticed your favorite gummy brands releasing new flavors with additional perks, or perhaps you’re feeling curious about ways to dial in your experience. Since the discovery of CBD, over 100+ additional cannabinoids have been identified in the cannabis plant, all with their own unique set of benefits. When these cannabinoids are paired with THC, they work together to produce the entourage effect which allows for a holistic cannabis experience. The entourage effect is the result of the synergy between the product’s cannabinoids, and allows the consumer to receive the full benefits of the compounds present. Some of these are pretty special, so in our Cannabinoid Spotlight blog series, we’ll highlight the most important new friends in the THC world for you and our favorite products containing these helpers. In this particular blog, we’ll take a look at THCv – a compound found in several products we carry.
THCv (Tetrahydrocannabivarin) is a minor cannabinoid known to produce a motivated, somewhat alert and energizing feeling of euphoria. Sometimes called “Diet Weed”, THCv is also a known appetite suppressant, meaning that you are less likely to get the munchies after consuming a product containing it. Due to its ability to block CB1 receptors at low doses, compared to THC’s behavior of binding to CB1 receptors to produce a psychoactive effect, THCv reduce cravings can also help depression symptoms, leaving the user more clear headed than after consumption of THC alone or traditional antidepressants and benzodiazepines. Found mostly in Sativa strains of cannabis, THCv is often recommended for daytime or any time when functionality or focus is important. Strains like Durban Poison are known to contain high levels of THCv. Dependent on dosage and other factors, THCV can be used to relieve stress and help symptoms associated with PTSD. It may help to reduce or even prevent anxiety and panic attacks and is shown to be an anti-psychotic when used in low doses. For those who are prone to anxiety when using THC, a small amount of THCv may reduce the duration and intensity of the THC high, including paranoia.
In addition to its cerebral properties, THCv may also have potential therapeutic benefits. Some studies suggest it could help with weight management and insulin regulation, making it a focus of research for metabolic conditions. As with all cannabinoids, individual responses can vary, so it’s important for users to approach THCv with an understanding of their own body and preferences. Below are just a few potential benefits of incorporating THCv into your regimen:
1. Neuroprotective Potential: THCv is being investigated for its role in minimizing Alzheimer’s symptoms. Research suggests it may help reduce inflammation and assist in clearing beta-amyloid plaques, which are associated with the disease.
2. Anxiety Reduction: It may also alleviate anxiety related to Alzheimer’s, potentially improving overall quality of life for those affected.
3. Appetite Suppressant: Unlike THC, which typically induces the “munchies,” THCv may suppress appetite and has anti-inflammatory properties, which could aid in managing conditions like obesity and diabetes.
These factors contribute to THCv’s growing popularity in both recreational and medicinal cannabis communities, making it a fascinating area of ongoing research!
